The Feldenkrais® Method was developed by Israeli physicist and engineer Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984). Through gentle hands-on and active movements this unique approach helps you sense and become more aware of your habitual movement patterns and learn what other movement options you have. This sensory-motor approach helps you create new neural pathways. Your brain, muscles, joints, skeleton and nervous system learn how to move with more ease, balance, comfort and efficiency. The newly learned fluid movements and postural patterns easily integrate into your daily activities, sports and work.
Many people have found this method helpful in:
- Overcoming pain and injuries.
- Improving their posture
- Gaining confidence in their standing and walking balance
- Improving their sports and art performance
The Feldenkrais® Method is based on principles of physics, biomechanics, and an empirical understanding of learning and human development.
In Feldenkrais’s Functional Integration, you will be guided in movement lessons. Gentle, non-invasive touch is used as the primary means of communication. Similar to Tai Chi or gentle yoga, Awareness Through Movement lessons use slow, mindful movements to achieve powerful effects in terms of strength, flexibility, and holistic integration of body and mind. Unique to the Feldenkrais Method® of somatic education is that these lessons tie directly into functional movements of daily life, such as walking efficiently, safely lifting objects, and improving one’s posture in sitting or standing. Feldenkrais’s Functional Integration® as Awareness Through Movement® might both be utilized in your one-on-one physical therapy treatments.
Active Solutions Physical Therapy currently offers monthly group Awareness Through Movement® classes. For more information please check out the event section of our Facebook page.

Feldenkrais and Physical Therapy
Depending on your injury, needs and interest Antoinette may integrate the Feldenkrais method in your physical therapy treatments. This could be by verbally guiding you through an Awareness Through Movement sequence for you to sense what your habitual movements and posture habits are and what other mobility options you have. Often times you will be issued written instructions for you to continue with these movements at home. Hands-on Functional Integration may also be utilized to improve mobility and create healthier movements.
